No one can expect to have a useable kayak after leaving it sitting in a shed for several months.  Kayaks of all shapes, sizes and types show signs of wear and tear over time, no matter what conditions you might store them in.  Of course, a well-used kayak needs more attention than one somebody got because it looked cool.  The amount of time you spend on kayak maintenance and repair depends on what kind of kayak you have and how often you use it.  Naturally, wood kayaks are going to need more care than metal or plastic kayaks, but that doesn’t mean you can get away with leaving a kayak of either type out in the shed and take a look at it once every six months.
You have to know what you’re doing to repair a kayak.  One wrong piece or movement could ruin the boat forever and lead to you having to start over with a new boat.  Inexperienced kayakers should take their damaged kayaks to the nearest store that specializes in repairing water vessels.  It might cost you a pretty penny, but it is money well spent because you know it’s going to get done right.  You can’t take any chances on something you have spent so much time and money in keeping up.  If you want to repair your kayak yourself in the future, there are books out there that can tell you how or you can enlist the services of an expert in this field.
