Kayak trailers are not a small investment, not by any stretch of the imagination. If you're going to be investing a couple thousand dollars in these trailers, you need to be certain that you're getting your moneys worth. You may even want to double back and think about other options, like the racks for the top of your car.

Not all cars allow those racks, however, and trailers definitely have their advantages. So let's look at kayak trailer features that you'll want to keep an eye out for as you prepare to make your investment.

One of the major things to look for is a light weight trailer. Aluminum is actually one of the preferred materials here, because it's sturdy without having too much weight. Too much weight means you're going to get more drag, and more drag means you're going to have more of a warp in your vehicle control or worse gas mileage.

Another kayak trailer feature to look at is weight capacity. Know the weight of your kayaks, and be sure to give yourself plenty of leeway. You want to be certain that you can carry all your normal gear and then some, just in case.

Security systems are also a good feature to look at. As petty as it is, some people like stealing wheels when they're not secured, and you don't want to have them taken off your trailer by surprise. Try to find a kayak trailer that has at least something in this department.

Looking into the difficulty of construction of these units is also a fairly good idea!
