Kids Kayaks

Getting your children into kayaking can be fun and rewarding. It's great exercise for them, they're going to enjoy it, it's family bonding time, and it means that you can get out on the water more frequently. However, knowing exactly how to approach the kayak situation for your kids can be a bit tricky. Here are a few options when you start looking at kids kayaks.

One of the things that you can do, and which is advisable when you start out, is to do tandem kayaking with your children. This means you can give them the adequate supervision and instruction that they're going to require in this early phase. There is a major drawback, however. Tandem kayaking is simply not the same as normal kayaking, and many people feel it pulls a lot of the fun out of the experience. You no longer have that sense of connection with the water and the boat that you otherwise have.

Another option, short of buying kids kayaks, is to buy a pigmy kit. Pigmy kits are designed to make a normal kayak fit a smaller person comfortably, and allows the safety and effectiveness that you'll need for your children. This is a solid option for those with especially small children, quickly growing children, or who simply don't want to buy kids kayaks.

Kids kayaks themselves, however, are going to be the best choice. These weren't really around two decades ago, so having them on the market today means that your children can have a kayak that is really “theirs.” It's going to give them the best results and it's going to be very fun. The only drawback is that as your children grow, you may have to buy more than one new kayak.
