Pelican Kayaks

--

Pelican kayaks might not meet the needs of the adventuring aficionado because they aren’t going to keep up with the sleek, high performance models from Perception and Wilderness Systems.  They do give the aspiring adventure the option to purchase a kayak on a budget.  Their prices start at under $300, which isn’t the cheapest purchase, but it’s better than the thousands of dollars people have to shell out for the higher end models. They’re fine for paddling around flat water creeks and lakes, but taking them into rougher waters would be ill-advised even for the most experienced adventurer.
Pelican Kayaks, which are manufactured by Pelican International Corporation, come in a variety of sizes and configurations.  The company has been around since 1968 and manufactures a number of different adventure toys, including canoes, peddle boats and fishing boats.  They stopped making their signature for awhile in the ‘90s.  Soon they returned in 2001 with a series of sit-in and sit-on-top models.  They call their hull material “Ram-X” and “Ram-X Celtm.”  The “Ram-X Celtm” is a 3-layer material that’s strong and impact resistant.  The “Ram-X” is not made of as nearly strong of material, but it’s built to last for several years under typical use.
As an affordable option for anything goes, there’s bound to be some issues with the design.  Some customers reported their boat turning sharply when they stopped paddling.  This problem was fixed with a minor tweak to the design of the boat.  There were also reported issues with drainage issues involving the seats, but those were remedied fairly easily as well.  Needless to say, you get what you pay for and what you pay for is worth every penny.
