Recreational Kayaks

When you make the decision to invest in your kayaking hobby, one of the things you may not be certain of is the exact type of kayak that you want to invest in. There are many types of kayaks, and about half a dozen major categories. One of the categories of kayak are recreational kayaks. Are recreational kayaks the right pick for you? Well, that depends. Let's go into the basics.

Recreational kayaks are intended for relaxed days on the water. This is the sort of thing you'll want if you're kayaking as a side portion of camping near calmer waters, if you like kayaking for the fishing options, if you enjoy bird watching as you're kayaking, and so on. The large, open cockpit of recreational kayaks makes them comfortable and easy to recline in if you just want to lay back and enjoy the open water. Many of them also have dry storage, which means you can bring along snacks, and of course it doubles as floatation aid.

These things have a wider build, which means they don't tip as easily as sea kayaks. Many of the recreational kayaks also have flat bottoms, which increases your friction on the water, but many different options and builds are available. Don't take these sorts of boats onto choppy waters, even if it's only choppy because of the wind. These were definitely not intended for whitewater kayaking or for longer trips, and you'll want to look for specialized kayaks for either of those scenarios. However, it's a solid model of kayak that suits many casual kayakers just fine!
