Harmony spray skirts > Info > Sprayskirts SprayskirtsWhen you enter into the world of sea kayaking, there are many techniques and a lot of equipment that you will need to get used to. One type of equipment that takes some adjustment is sprayskirts. The importance of sprayskirts can't be overstated. The purpose is simple – they keep water out of your kayak. That's not just a matter of comfort and warmth (though those are important, too). It's a matter of keeping your kayak floating in the correct place above the water. Your sprayskirt is going to be attached to you and to the cockpit of your kayak. When you put on the sprayskirt, you simply stretch it out and work it into position all the way around the cockpit. The exact technique for doing this can vary depending on the type of sprayskirt that you are using, but in general, this fundamental basic remains the same. Often, the more difficult and worrisome part is removing the sprayskirt if you happen to capsize. Most sprayskirts come with a “release loop.” To release the sprayskirt, pull the loop forward, and then back. A concern is sometimes raised because the loop can accidentally get tucked underneath the skirt itself. In this case, you'll grip the side of the sprayskirt and pull it across the cockpit. If you want something looser without as many concerns for removal, nylon sprayskirts provide a good option, but keep in mind that easy removal means a greater likelihood that it will accidentally fall out of position and stop protecting your kayak.
